Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ on This Topic

What is BRC IoP certification?

BRC IoP (British Retail Consortium - Packaging Materials) is a global safety and quality standard for manufacturers of food-contact packaging materials. It is recognised by GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) and accepted worldwide.

What does BRC AA grade mean?

BRC AA grade is the highest achievement level in the certification system. The manufacturer has met all requirements with no critical or major non-conformities detected. Achieving AA in an unannounced audit is the most prestigious result.

Can food packaging be sold without BRC certification?

Legally yes, but major food manufacturers and retailers typically require BRC or equivalent GFSI certification. Global brands like Nestlé, Ferrero, and Mondelez do not work with uncertified suppliers.

How often are BRC audits conducted?

BRC audits are conducted annually. For AA and A grade manufacturers, the next audit is scheduled 12 months later; for B and C grade, 6 months later. C grade requires mandatory corrective action.

What is the difference between BRC and ISO 22000?

BRC focuses directly on packaging manufacturers, while ISO 22000 is a general food safety management system. BRC contains more specific and detailed requirements, making it more suitable for meeting retailer demands.
